y?

Tyler shared this funny story today about his day at school. We were playing hangman in class today. The teacher pulled my stick out of the the box and asked me to guess a letter. Here is a recap of their conversation:

Teacher: Tyler, guess a letter.
Tyler: "Y"
Teacher: Cause we are playing hangman.
Tyler: "Y"
Teacher: Cause it is fun to play. Please guess a letter.
Tyler: "Y"
Teacher: Oh, your guess is the letter y.
Tyler: Yes.

Tyler is such a little smarty pants.

Are you ok?

Tyler and I retired to the Quin-Zee about 8:00pm. I like to go to bed early on Sunday nights. I need to try and catch up on my sleep when I can. I bought a couple of lightweight sleeping bags last summer for our 3 day 2 night backpacking trek to Notch Lake. I bought a 20 degree down sleeping bag and a 32 degree synthetic bag. They both worked great! Tyler complained the next morning that he got to hot. I guess that snow is a really good insulator after all.

I was awoken at 1:30am to the sound of "Brent, Brent, Brent, are you ok?" I wasn't sure what was going on, but apparently Shantell had a nightmare that the Quin-Zee had collapsed. I'm not sure why she had to wake me, as a visual inspection of the Quin-Zee showed that the roof hadn't collapsed. I said that we were fine and tried to drift back to sleep. I couldn't. I was torn between staying outside and sleeping, or going inside to calm Shantell's fear. Nevertheless, I decided to ease Shantell's fears and we went inside to finish out the night.

Sleeping in the Quin-Zee was awesome. It brought back a flood of childhood memories of camping in the snow. I also used to spend a couple nights each winter sleeping in some sort of snow fort or cave that I built in the backyard. Its funny how I as a parent like to live out my childhood memories with my kids.

Breaking the Sabbath or Wholesome Family Activity?

I skipped stake conference and finished hollowing out the Quin-Zhee today. The kids were very excited to help me. They helped clear out the snow from the cave. It would have taken me twice as long to finish if they hadn't helped me. After we finished hollowing it out, we cooked some hot chocolate in the Quin-Zhee.
Brielle wanted to sleep in the Quin-Zhee tonight, but later changed her mind so Tyler volunteered.

Other pictures of the day can be seen in the photo album.

How Much Snow Does it Take to Make a Snow Cave?

I have been telling the kids that we should go camping in the snow. My plan was to either build a snow cave or to build a Quin-Zee.

Shantell wasn't to thrilled with the prospect of her kids freezing to death in the mountains. I did alot of winter camping as a Boy Scout, so I am pretty sure of my winter camping abilities. Needless to say, I didn't take the kids camping in the mountains. I built a Quin-Zee in the backyard instead. Now the kids can freeze to death in the backyard. :)

I started off by pilling up snow from parts of our yard, as well as my neighbors yards. There were two big snow storms within a week of each other so there was plenty of snow. I started carving into the mound mid afternoon. I should have stated working on it earlier in the day. The neighbors blasted xBox 360 prevented me from starting earlier.

Pigs in a Blanket

Brielle wanted to help cook tonight and much to Amanda's dismay, she chose to make pigs in a blanket. It was as easy as wrapping the hot dogs in Pillbury crescent rolls. The only problem with the recipe is that it calls for a working oven. The heating element of the oven decided to burn out while it was preheating the oven. Luckily the Owens have a working oven, so we went over there and finished cooking them.

Cut the cheese and pass the soup.

Amanda volunteered to make dinner tonight. She made grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. It was delicious. I highly recommend using pepper jack cheese instead of the usual cheeder cheese.

Can you smell what the Tyler is cooking?

I was shovling the driveway tonight when Tyler came out and asked if he could cook dinner. I said sure. Tyler went in the house and looked up a recipe on nickJR.com. He choose a Chicken Noodle Soup recipe. It was a pretty basic recipe, so I of course had to make it my own. Tyler peeled and cut the carrots, quartered the onions, peeled the garlic, and did a good job of stiring and sampling the soup. Here is the recipe.

Tyler's Chicken Nooodle Soup

Ingredients
-----------
10 cups chicken stock
I used chicken base to create the stock.
5 Carrots Diced
5 Celery stalks Diced
1 1/2 Onions quarterd
3 Cloves Garlic Minced
3 Large Chicken Breasts
1/2 tsp Dried Rosemary
1/2 tsp Dried Oregano
1/2 tsp Dried Basil
1/2 tsp Dried Tarragon
2 tsp Mustard
3 Bay Leaves

Egg noodles, or your favorite pasta. Tyler choose a 12oz box of multi-grain penne rigate.

Directions
----------
Cook chicken until juices run semi-clear. I didn't cook the chicken all the way, as I wanted the chicken to finish cooking in the pot. Then dice chicken into bite size pieces.
Heat chicken stock until boiling. Once boiing add carrots, celery, spices, mustard, and chicken pieces.
Reduce heat and let simmer for 40-50 minutes.

Sticks and Stones and Piggy Tails

Brielle thinks of herself as a tomboy. She doesn't like to wear anything but long pants, short sleeved shirts(without buttons or collars), boxers, and low cut socks. She doesn't like to wear any bows or clips in her hair. She has a style all her own. She is stubbornly sweet and to quote her "sexy". I love her personality and am very proud to be her dad. Shantell put Bre's hair in pigtails today. Bre started to through a fit but allowed Shantell to put her hair in pigtails. Here are a couple of pix that I snapped of her. She is quite the character when it comes to getting her picture taken. She has a lovely smile, but often shows her fake smile during pictures. Maybe this is due to the fact that I like to take a lot of pictures of my kids.

In Need of a Good Engineer

A big storm blew threw Provo today. We received a generous 6 inches of snow. It was a nice wet snow. Perfect snowman making snow. Bre and I started making a snowman and were soon joined by Tyler. The base was rolled by me. The mid section was rolled by Bre, and the head was rolled by Tyler. We obviously didn't make very round body sections. Perhaps one of my engineer brothers can give us some pointers. :)

We didn't have a carrot for the nose, so I went to the store to get one. The carrots were located next to the radishes, so I decided to make a snowman with two eyes made out of radishes. Shantell thinks the snowman is high. So I guess we will call our snowman Potsy the snowman.

Happy New Year

Here are the first pictures of the kids and Shantell for 2008. We journeyed up to my folks house around 3:00 to celebrate my dad's and my brother Bryan's birthdays. I got my dad a 6 pack of Dr. Pepper and got Bryan a FM transmitter for his car. The kids had a fun time sledding down the hill behind my parents house. Bre surprised me by snowboarding down the hill on one of the sleds. She is quite the brave little soul.
